Erik Roner, an extreme sports athlete and star of MTV’s Nitro Circus, died in a skydiving accident Monday morning in Squaw Valley, California. The Sierra Sun reports that Roner was one of four parachuters conducting a skydiving performance for the opening ceremony of the Squaw Valley Institute Celebrity Golf Tournament, an annual charity event. The group included experienced skydivers Aaron McGovern, JT Holmes, and Charles Bryant. Roy Tuscany, a witness who was at the scene, said McGovern landed first, followed by Holmes. Charles Bryant jumped last and also landed safely. Roner was third to jump, but hit a tree at high speed 25 to 30 feet above the ground as he was landing, reports CBS News, and reportedly died immediately from the impact. His parachute became tangled in the tree, and rescuers were only able to retrieve his body 40 minutes later. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead on the scene. He was 39 years old. Roner was a professional skier and pioneer BASE jumper who has starred in multiple films and television programs. He is survived by his wife, Annika, his son, Oskar, and daughter, Kasper.
